Sky Bingo Rainforest Rescue
Sky Bingo wants to do its bit to save the Amazon and in order to do so they have teamed up with two green organisations to help to save one of our most precious resources – trees. Sky Bingo will work closely with Sky Rainforest Rescue and the World Wildlife Federation UK in order to raise £500 for a campaign aimed at stopping the relentless deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.
To do their bit for this campaign all players need to do is ‘like’ the Sky Bingo Facebook page. That’s it! The more players that do so, the more money that will be generated towards saving a whooping 1 billion trees in a north west state in Brazil called Acre. That is a huge amount of trees to try and save, but unfortunately still not enough to reverse the dire effects of global warming. With the world getting hotter and hotter as more and more greenhouse gases are pumped into the atmosphere by the world’s biggest polluting nations, we need all the trees we can get in order to maintain some sort of balance or even to counteract some of the negative effects. However, it is estimated that deforestation actually accounts for 20% of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. In simple terms, it means that chopping down the trees in the Amazon at the rate at which we are doing creates the same pollution as all the cars, planes and trains in the world put together! In the Brazilian state of Acre, deforestation in the last fifteen years has produced more than 25 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year!
The Amazon rainforest is one of the greatest assets we have in order to ensure our survival and that of our children and grandchildren. Other than act as a control of our environment, the rainforest is the home and livelihood of more than 30 million people in the Amazon basin. If it were to ever be destroyed, it would spell the end of their way of life and would cease the priceless resources gathered from it like cocoa, nuts, fruit and wood. Destruction of the rainforest would also mean that important plants used for research and cures of illnesses like cancer and heart conditions would become extinct and our scientific advancements in such areas would suffer a serious blow.
