Online Roulette

Roulette has by far the best odds of any casino game and it's profitability is perhaps the reason why it is so popular. The biggest characteristic of the Roulette game has to be the wheel which usually has 37 numbers. There are variations of the wheel but for the purposes of this article we shall refer to the standard roulette wheel which is the one found in most bingo site side-games and most online casinos.

The 37 numbers of the roulette when go from 1 to 36 and it includes zero as an actual number. The numbers 1-39 are divided into 18 red, 18 red, and there are 18 odd, and 18 even numbers. Red and black numbers are placed next to each other as are the odd and even numbers. This way there are never two consecutive even or odd numbers next to each other, or any two red or black numbers next to each other. Numbers are also placed on the wheel in no particular order so they are on at random, but the sequence is obviously standardised so all roulette wheels are the same.

Roulette Bets

Here is a useful list of some of the different types of bets you can place on Roulette. You don’t need to learn them all at once and we recommend that if you are beginner that you stick to the easy and least costly bets such as betting on colours, odds, or evens, then progress to dozen bets, and then to block betting for more experienced players.

Even Chance Bets

If you place a bet on the number being red, black, odd or even you will get paid even money.

Example: A £10 bet wins £10 plus your initial wager. Total £20.

Some providers follow the rule followed in land based casinos which states that if the number zero comes out as the winner that those bets placed on evens lose half the amount instead of the full amount.

Dozen Bets

Since there are 36 numbers available (excluding zero) then there are 3 dozen bets which obviously have 12 numbers in each.

  • If you bet on the 1st dozen you cover 1 to 12
  • If you bet on the 2nd dozen you cover 13 to 24
  • If you bet on the 3rd dozen you cover 25 to 36

The payout odds of dozens bets are 2 / 1
Example: A £10 bet wins £20 plus your initial wager

Column Bets

Column bets also have 12 numbers in each column and are similar to the dozen bets but the numbers are laid out horizontally.

  • 1st column (1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34)
  • 2nd column (2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, 35)
  • 3rd column (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36)

The payout odds of columns bets are 2 / 1
Example: A £10 bet wins £20 plus your initial wager

Straight Up Bets

Here a bet is placed on a single number to win. This bet pays out the most since the odds of winning are the smallest. However note that whereas there are 37 numbers of the when including the zero which is as good a number for this bet as any, the payout amount is 35 to 1. This gives the Roulette a slight edge over the player.

The payout odds of straight up bets are 2 / 1
Example: A £10 bet wins £350 plus your initial wager

Split Bets

This is when a bet in placed on 2 numbers which are next to each other on the table.

The payout odds of split bets are 17 / 1
Example: A £10 bet wins £170 plus your initial wager

Street Bets

This is when you bet on 3 numbers on the layout.

The payout odds of split bets are 11 / 1
Example: A £10 bet wins £110 plus your initial wager

Square Bets

Here the player bets on a block of 4 numbers on the table.

The payout odds of split bets are 8 / 1
Example: A £10 bet wins £80 plus your initial wager. Total £90.

The Roulette Zero

The 37th number, zero (0), also has odds of 35:1 but is on the wheel to give the casino a slight advantage over the player. Betting on zero is as good a bet as any really as it has the same odds as any other number. Another variation of the standard Roulette game is the American Roulette which has a zero and a double zero. This favours the casino even more and there is no point taking part in this game if your odds are reduced even further.

Table Maximums in Roulette

All Roulette tables have a maximum bet amount that can be placed. This serves to give the casino an advantage over the player however it also makes things fair in a way. If table maximum bets did not exist then in theory (if you had a lot of money!) you could keen on doubling your previous bet if you number did not come up, and do this time and time again until you won all your money back. However this would defeat the purpose of the game for the casino. If there is a limit then the player has to withdraw at some point and the casino can have an edge over him/her. Table maximum bets are usually way and above what the average player bets. Most people that play like a flutter, but maxima range from £100 on a normal table to £500 for a high rollers VIP table, so in effect most players are unaffected by this.

Playing Online Roulette

Most bingo sites nowadays have the Roulette game as part of their side games so you don't have to register in an online casino to play this. The games on bingo sites are of just as good a quality as in the online casinos, in fact the Roulette games are "sub-contracted" so to speak, so you don't have to worry about the quality of your Roulette experience. This is a great feature since you don't have to leave the bingo site once logged in to play casino games and there is usually no downloading required.
